MONTHLY HEALTH TIPS
July: Sun Safety Month
By Troy
Johnson
UV radiation, also known as Ultra Violet Radiation, can be both damaging and beneficial to your health. UV radiation, which is provided by the summer sun, induces the production of vitamin D, which plays an important role in the maintenance of many major organs.
However, over-exposure to UV radiation can damage your skin, cause direct DNA damage and potentially lead to skin cancer. Additionally, UV Radiation can cause severe damage to your eyes.
Here are some of the ways you can protect yourself from harmful UV rays:
Limit your exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.
Remember, shade from trees, awnings, umbrellas does not offer complete protection.
A hat with a wide brim offers good sun protection for eyes, ears, face, neck and scalp.
Apply sunscreen with a protection rating of SPF 30 or higher. And re-apply every two hours, especially after swimming or exercising outdoors.
And remember to always wear sunglasses.
