INTERNAL MEDICINE
Doctors of Internal Medicine -- or "Internists," as they are called -- care for adult patients beginning at the age of 17. They continue to see these patients throughout their adult lives.
Internists are specially trained in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of adult diseases. They are sometimes referred to as "the doctor's doctor"
because they are often called upon to act as consultants to other physicians to help solve
puzzling diagnostic problems.
In addition to disease pre-vention and the promotion
of health, Internists also offer
expertise in women's health,
substance abuse, mental health and treatment of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system and reproductive organs.
